Sprouts Creative started with a simple observation: too many local food and lifestyle brands end up with visuals that feel borrowed from somewhere else. We built this studio to keep things honest, personal, and grounded in the way you actually work. These are the principles that guide every project, from the first workshop to the final edit.
We started this studio because too many good food and lifestyle brands in Cape Town were being held back by visuals that didn't match what they were actually making. A neighbourhood bakery with exceptional sourdough shouldn't look like a generic template. A small coffee roaster with a loyal following shouldn't have to choose between a corporate rebrand and staying invisible.
We don't chase trends that make every brand look the same. The goal is an identity that reflects the people behind the product, the way they work, and the customers they serve. If a visual feels too slick, it's probably wrong for a small business.
Every project starts with understanding the business, not jumping straight to logos. We ask about your regulars, your best sellers, your plans for the next year. That context shapes the design decisions, so the final work actually fits how you operate.
A brand should still feel right in three years, not just on launch day. We keep the visual system simple enough for you to use without a design team, and we document the choices so nothing gets lost when priorities shift.
Beyond the finished logo or packaging, we want clients to feel more confident about their own brand. They understand why certain colours work, how to brief a photographer, and what makes a post worth publishing. That knowledge stays with them long after the project ends.
For junior designers, we run monthly portfolio reviews because we remember how hard it was to get honest feedback early on. For business owners, the two-day branding intensive covers the essentials of visual identity so they can make better decisions, whether they work with us or not.
Sprouts Creative started as a one-person operation working from a kitchen table in Observatory. Over the years it became a small team with a clear point of view about what food and lifestyle brands need from their visuals. This timeline traces the milestones that shaped the way we work now.
2017
A small coffee roaster in Woodstock asked for a logo refresh. The project grew into a full identity: packaging, a simple website, and a set of photography guidelines. That first engagement taught us how much consistency matters for a business that sells through multiple channels.
2019
We left the kitchen table behind and joined a shared creative space in Salt River. Being around other designers and photographers changed how we approached shoots and client work. It also gave us room to take on larger projects like full packaging lines for artisan food producers.
2021
Junior designers kept asking for feedback on their work, so we opened a monthly session in the studio. It started with six people and grew through word of mouth. These evenings now shape how we mentor and remind us what early-career designers are struggling with.
2022
Business owners kept asking how we make creative decisions. We designed a short workshop that walks participants through strategy, visual direction, and practical next steps. It is not a design course. It is meant to help people commission work with confidence and understand what goes into a brand system.
2023
Clients were asking for ongoing social media support, not just a one-off identity. We brought in an editor and a photographer to handle content calendars, short-form video, and monthly shoots. This let us offer a complete production chain under one roof instead of sending clients to different freelancers.
2024
The shared space got too small for our shoots and workshops. We found a standalone studio with a small kitchen area, which turned out to be ideal for food photography and client tastings. The space reflects how we work: practical, warm, and focused on real products rather than elaborate sets.
The people behind the work
We are a compact group of designers, photographers and strategists who have spent years working with food and lifestyle businesses. No account managers, no hand-offs between departments. The people you meet in the first call are the ones doing the work.
Founder & Creative Director
Maya started Sprouts Creative after a decade of art direction in the hospitality sector. She has led rebrands for restaurant groups and roasteries across the Western Cape, and still sits in on every brand strategy workshop.
Senior Designer
Thabo handles logo systems, packaging and print collateral. He has a background in editorial design and a habit of sketching label ideas by hand before opening any software. His work has been featured in local design publications.
Photography & Content Lead
Lindiwe plans and shoots the visual content that keeps brands consistent on Instagram and TikTok. She spent five years photographing food for local magazines, so she knows how to make a dish look honest rather than overstyled.
Video Editor
Daniel cuts short-form video for social channels, from behind-the-scenes clips in commercial kitchens to product launches. He works in tight turnaround times and understands what stops a scroll in the first two seconds.
Brand Strategist
Aisha runs the discovery sessions and monthly portfolio reviews for junior designers. She has a sharp eye for positioning and helps business owners articulate what makes their product different before a single visual is made.
Production Coordinator
Ruan keeps projects on schedule, coordinates print runs and manages the two-day branding intensive. If you need to know where your packaging is in the production line, he is the person who will give you a straight answer.
Between us, we have worked with artisan food producers, neighbourhood delis, coffee roasters and small retail chains. That means we know the practical constraints of a small business: tight budgets, seasonal menus, limited staff time. We build identities that fit those realities, not the other way around.
